Training

Dr Matthew Broadhead is a Fellowship-trained Australian Orthopaedic Surgeon who specializes in the treatment of disorders of the hip and knee. Dr Broadhead graduated from the University of New South Wales in 2006 and completed his training in Orthopaedic Surgery at hospitals in Australia and the U.S.A to become a  Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS). He is also a Fellow of the Australian Orthopaedic Association (FAOrthA).

The main focuses of Dr Broadhead’s practice are hip and knee replacement. He has completed further subspecialty training, with  Fellowships in lower limb reconstruction at the Prince of Wales and Sydney Children’s Hospital. He gained additional experience in revision joint replacement surgery and limb salvage with the Royal Prince Alfred Bone and Soft Tissue Sarcoma Unit.

Dr Broadhead has experience in treating patients of all ages, including children and the younger, active patient. Dr Broadhead performs total hip replacement through both minimally invasive direct anterior and posterior approaches and total knee replacement with an emphasis on early recovery after surgery. He has completed further training to perform robotic-assisted knee replacements.

Research and Teaching

Dr Broadhead is focused on achieving successful outcomes with an evidence-based approach. He has experience in both clinical and basic science research and was awarded a Master of Surgery (ChM) by the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh for research on ACL reconstruction techniques. Dr Broadhead was a National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Scholar and was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) by the University of Melbourne for studies on bone biology and orthopaedic oncology. He is a Conjoint Lecturer of the University of New South Wales and has been the lead author on numerous peer-reviewed journal articles. He presents his research internationally.

We treat patients of all ages, ranging from children who may have developmental disorders of the hip or knee, to young active adults who may need reconstructive surgery and rehabilitation following a sporting injury. We care for older patients with painful arthritis who may be suitable for joint replacement surgery.
